Essentials of the Faith: the Creeds D Fevig, July 10, 2021April 16, 2024 The early believers dealt with many beliefs and interpretations of the Scriptures. They couldn’t even agree which of the many books and writings should be included. Within the first few hundred years the church basically finalized the books of Scripture, although the Catholic Church today includes a few additional books. They also came up with creeds, or statements, that contained the essential points of the faith. The two main ones are the two below. Click on the links for each creed to learn more about them. Also check out this comprehensive article about how God speaks to us, God is the Great Communicator. THE APOSTLES CREED I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit; Born of the Virgin Mary; Suffered under Pontius Pilate; Was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into Hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven; And sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; The Holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints; The Forgiveness of sins; The Resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting. Amen. THE NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten not made, being of one substance with the Father, through Whom all things were made: Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man: Who for us, too, was crucified under Pontius Pilate, suffered, and was buried: the third day He rose according to the Scriptures, ascended into heaven, and is seated on the right hand of the Father: He shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom shall have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son: Who together with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified: Who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy, Christian, and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and life of the age to come. Amen. Theology The Obedience of Faith July 19, 2022April 9, 2024 Saved by GraceThe cornerstone doctrine of the Protestant Reformation is expressed so well in Ephesians 2:8-9, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” As… Read More
Theology How to Interpret the Bible August 10, 2021April 13, 2024 Here are some of the guidelines I use in interpreting the Scriptures. 1. We must discern and differentiate the various writing styles found in the scriptures. There is poetry, straightforward prose, hyperbole (exaggeration), idioms, symbolism (as found in apocalyptic literature such as Revelation), and more. For example, look at Jesus’… Read More
