How About Super Decadence?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\">As usual, I watched the Super Bowl this year.&nbsp; I think I have seen every one, including the first one in 1967 between the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs.&nbsp; I\u2019m still waiting and hoping that my Detroit Lions will make it someday!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">I had an unexpectedly negative reaction to the event this year.&nbsp; I was really turned off with the whole production.  But please know that this is my issue.&nbsp; I\u2019m not throwing stones at anyone who may disagree, only offering some of my thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:600\">The Coin Toss<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"227\" height=\"152\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/searchingscripture.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Super-bowl-coin-toss-1967-cropped.jpg?resize=227%2C152&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3515\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">1967<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"195\" height=\"183\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/searchingscripture.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Superbowl-coin-toss-2023.jpg?resize=195%2C183&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3514\" style=\"width:179px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">2023<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It all started when they flashed back to the coin toss at the beginning of the first Super Bowl.\u00a0 The participants were the head referee, and two captains from each team.\u00a0 This year, 56 years later, there was a crowd that included four captains from each team, and a host of other \u201ccelebrities\u201d; probably 25-30 people.\u00a0 That comparison struck me as a reflection of our changing culture.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:600\">Sports Gluttony<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Regarding the game, in addition to the coin toss extravaganza, there are two weeks of hype between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl.&nbsp; On game day, the official pregame show goes for about 6 hours, not including all of the other coverage over two weeks.&nbsp; The halftime show goes for 45-50 minutes, compared to 12-15 in a normal NFL game.&nbsp; There are jet flyovers (at taxpayer expense), countless interviews and stories about players and others, and many related features and special programming.&nbsp; And there is the cost.&nbsp; In 1967, you could go to the game in person for $12 ($105 adjusted for inflation).  In 2023, tickets averaged over $5,500!  The rising ticket and ad prices are needed to fill the owners&#8217; coffers, who have to pay the millionaires who play the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">All of this \u201cexcess\u201d really provoked me.&nbsp; The game itself was a good game, close and down to the wire.&nbsp; And although I didn\u2019t watch the long pregame or halftime show, I still felt like this game and everything associated with it was, to use a food analogy, like gluttony in the extreme!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:600\">Our Cultural Excesses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Our culture has embraced many other excesses since that first Super Bowl.&nbsp; The national debt in 1967 was about 326 billion (about 2.8 trillion adjusted for inflation).&nbsp; Today, it is about 31 trillion.&nbsp; Social media has exploded to give us way too much information.&nbsp; We have excesses in the areas of sexuality, materialism, and in just about every part of life.&nbsp; We have been clamoring for, and getting, more of everything the world has to offer.  Our ears are constantly being tickled with new products to buy, new experiences, new initials in the gender\/sexual category acronyms, etc., etc. etc.! &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:600\">Our Cultural Scarcity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But we are experiencing scarcity in the most important thing: God\u2019s Word and his ways.&nbsp; Amos was a prophet in Israel during the 700s B.C., which had some of the same issues that we have today in our country.&nbsp; He said this: <em>\u201cThe days are coming,\u201d declares the Sovereign Lord, \u201cwhen I will send a famine through the land\u2014not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the Lord.\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=amos+8%3A11&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">chapter 8, verse 11<\/a>).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The government and media are becoming increasingly hostile to God and believers in&nbsp;Jesus.&nbsp; &nbsp; We have not, as a culture, paid attention to the timeless words of the Creator of the universe!&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Hosea was a prophet and contemporary of Amos.&nbsp; Hosea wrote of Israel: \u201c<em>She has not&nbsp;acknowledged that I was the one who gave her the grain, the new wine and oil, who&nbsp;lavished on her the silver and gold\u2014which they used for Baal. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=hosea+2%3A8&amp;version=NIV\" title=\"\">chapter 2, verse 8<\/a>).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Like Israel, we have been blessed by God with so many material things.&nbsp; But instead of&nbsp;acknowledging that everything we have is from God, we have bowed to <a href=\"https:\/\/searchingscripture.com\/?p=2267\">Baal,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/searchingscripture.com\/?p=2267\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">the ancient \u201cgod\u201d of prosperity and materialism<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:600\">What To Do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">We, the people of God, can make a difference. &nbsp; Remember <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2+chronicles+7%3A14&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">2 Chronicles 7:14<\/a><\/strong>, <em>\u201cif my&nbsp;people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face&nbsp;and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin&nbsp;and will heal their land.&nbsp; <\/em>To the extent that we have contributed to the decadence around us, let\u2019s seek God about specific actions we can take based on this scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">As for the Super Bowl, I\u2019m not sure if I\u2019m going to watch the game next year or not.&nbsp; If&nbsp;I do, it may be the game only, possibly even with the sound muted.&nbsp; But please know that I\u2019m not making any judgments of those who do, or those who enjoy the hoopla associated with it.&nbsp; This is my opinion, what God is speaking to me about this.&nbsp; In every area of life, each of us needs to hear what God is saying to us, and do it.
